In observance of Christmas festivities, H.E. Dr. Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, The Honourable Hugh Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation and The Honourable Gail Teixeira, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance joined Guyanese in the diaspora for a virtual celebration, hosted by the UK Guyanese Diaspora. The virtual event was chaired by Peter Ramrayka – Chairman of Guyhealth(UK) and attracted 70+ attendees, drawn from United Kingdom, United States, Canada, French Guiana and Guyana.


The President in his address to the virtual gathering, expressed gratitude to the Diaspora for the vocal and supporting role they played during the electoral crisis this year. His Excellency also elaborated on developmental plans on stream and encouraged the diaspora to return home to play their part in advancing Guyana into a new era. He extended warm wishes for the holiday season and thanked the organizers for bringing together Guyanese across the diaspora.


In turn, Minister Todd shared his appreciation to the Guyanese Diaspora for standing up for democracy and the rule of law. He further informed the gathering of the Diaspora Engagement Strategy (DES) which is being finalized to ensure a systematic approach in place to facilitate the diaspora.
Minister Teixeira also commended the diaspora for their support of democratic principles. She informed the participants of government’s progress to date in various sectors and expressed the positive response by the public, especially with the regards to the nationwide COVID-19 relief efforts.


Following the swearing of the new government in Guyana a number of concerned UK Guyanese who were extremely active in the UK in supporting adherence to the will of the electorate continued their activities as several members had extensive experience in diaspora activities in the UK. The UK organisers found Christmas to be an opportune time to bring together a wide range of Guyanese across political, ethnic, faith and non-faith inclinations in one virtual space to reflect and celebrate. The event included special appearances by two Guyanese personalities who had UK national and Guyanese recognition for their television and artistic work- Ram John Holder (Porkpie)- Television and Keith Waithe – Musician, Composer and Teacher.
